Sheridan said at the briefing meeting that is goal was to keep down losses
on BOTH sides. His statements to the other ships before jumping to avoid
hitting non-hostiles, all point to his intent to keep loss of life down to
the bare minimum. His grief at seeing the Pollux go up further testifies
to this.
I accept that you perhaps didn't get this aspect; but others did.
