How do you respond to those who say, "Copyrights don't help the writers, actors, et cetera. Copyright only helps the business suits gt rich while the artists get conned. Artists would be better off without copyright."

Someone recently said that to me, and I was stumped. It does seem the current system, rather than helping the artists, actually hurts them. Would artists be better-off without copyright?

thanks,
troy :-)

There's a difference between copyright and royalties. Studios own the
copyright to movies and TV shows, but the royalties off those projects
go to artists and writers. If a studio can't have the copyright to
something, they just won't make it.

Authors and artists hold the copyright to their own works, and
maintaining the copyright does serve their interests.
