[Hotstorage-sc] Hotstorage updates (and request for input)

Hi HotStorage SC,

*A) I wanted to update you on ongoing HotStorage activities.*

HS '26 (https://linkprotect.cudasvc.com/url?a=https%3a%2f%2fwww.hotstorage.org%2f2026%2f&c=E,1,QNk7JqhqOw8NePpp1LAOMGi0WrEBQ990i32W_RSMLQQxPhyJED5PaUGsnz-OTgXi_N1nMVgfLeInWpD94JkMWXV1b5VGQvmxIIkYzjuc&typo=1) is being held as a SOSP workshop
this year. Unlike regular SOSP workshops that are one day long, HS '26 will
be 1.5 days long (Oct 28, 29). We hope to see you there. If you are
planning to attend, please let me know. In a pinch, the PC chairs may ask
you to chair a session.

While SOSP will cover all our costs for Oct 29, we are covering the costs
for Oct 28. However, SOSP did not allow us to charge a separate
registration fee for HotStorage (attendees pay a fixed fee for all SOSP
workshops). This has raised two issues. First, we don't have a list of
HotStorage attendees, which has complicated planning for T-shirts and
dinner on Oct 28. We have come up with some workarounds for this issue.
Second, our only source of income this year will be sponsorships.
Currently, we are somewhat short but we are hoping additional sponsorships
will come through. The SIGOPS chairs are aware of the situation and we will
be able to use our surplus funds if needed. In the future, we could
consider co-locating HotStorage with SOSP but not as an SOSP workshop
(similar to APSys 2025). This would allow us more flexibility with
registration but would raise our costs as well.

Regarding the AI-generated submissions that we discussed previously, the PC
chairs informed me that none of the 10 submissions by the (same) authors
were accepted. This was because all the papers were below the bar, not due
to any specific policy for AI-generated submissions. Our email discussion
led to various suggestions for future workshops. We will revisit them in a
later meeting when we do the debriefing with the chairs (likely Dec-Jan
timeframe).

*B) I am looking for your input regarding PC chairs for HS '27.*

We need to choose PC chairs for HS '27. This has been delayed, partly
because we are following a different schedule this year (my apologies).
Instead of waiting to organize a separate meeting, I thought we could try
to come to a consensus by email this time.
