Interesting...I would have guessed he sealed his fate by going to Z'ha'dum. If
he had not gone as Delenn warned, could Sheridan have avoided that future? Or
was it already set in stone, as you seem to suggest?

Derek

P.S. You seem to answer every forum message posted to you. I find that
amazing...why do you do it, if you don't mind my asking? It must take a
significant amount of time...

another. And yeah, I answer most questions that require a response.

What amazed me about this ep is that it all felt right. The War was wrapped
quickly but the reasoning fit. Unlike Trek where theres 38min of Buildup to a 3
min resoluution. I'm glad that now we get to see the battle to regain earth,
I've always felt that this story was of even more importance than the shadow
War, although we could'n have one without the other. Only 3 things nawed at me
while I watched "ITF"
where was Garibaldi and G'kar during all of this? And how will we arrive at the
future depicted in WWE for Centari Prime, In flames and with Delenn and
Sheridan in Custody, and with Londo having a keeper, and being really peeved at
Sheridan.

Hi Joe,

I've only seen up to FTA but I have been reading some of the threads on the
three ages.

You seem to say that the What do we want, Who are we and Why are close to the
three ages of mankind.

I was wondering if anything here relates to Stephen Hawking the Cosmologist?

Well the First age would be when we find out what we want (Biological,
survival)

Second age is When we find out Who we are (Inquiry, sophistication)

The third age is Why we are. As Hawking theorises that if we could answer the
question of why it is that we, and the universe exist "it would be the ultimate
triumph of human reason, for then we would know the mind of God."

It's just that Hawkings why relates to understanding God and well there are
religious/theological themes on B5.

Any comments, did Hawkings theory provide any ideas etc???

Mlv

Howdy, Joe;

"Into the Fire" was, as expected, a wonderful episode. I'm glad that I was
right about viewing 405 and 406 back to back giving 405 a lot more meaning to
me. From the opening fast-paced battle sequence to the final scene with John
and Delenn sitting back and taking in the galactic changes, it was a very
pleasant viewing experience.

That said, however, there was one bit about it that really bugged me. It
was what kept it from getting a 10.0 vote from me in the P5.

While I found the comments by both Sheridan and Delenn to their "captors"
very powerful and moving, I just can't buy that millions of years of warfare
and disagreement can be resolved in five minutes of talk with two members of
the younger races. It just doesn't wash with me. I understand that a big part
of it was that the younger races now "knew" what the Vorlons and Shadows were
really doing, but that didn't have to necessitate the end of hostilities so
easily.

We had all this build-up over the years of the Babylon 5 epic for a grand
showdown -- we had skirmishes, small battles, a big battle against one of the
two enemies and then we got all set-up for the final battle to end it, once and
for all. Are we to believe that these two ancient enemies, who would fight and
slaughter for millions of years, would just give up after talking to Sheridan
and Delenn for a few minutes? I don't get it. Even if they realized that
they'd have to wipe out most of the humans, drazi, narn, minbari, brakiri, . .
etc., I can't seem them giving in so easily. I mean the galaxy's an
immensely huge place and we know from the show itself that there were many more
races that had nothing to do with the Army of Light. The parents could always
start over with the younger children.

Now, please don't get me wrong; I loved the episode. I enjoyed the very
moving arguments for the freedom of the younger races. It was very well
written stuff and had me cheering by the time Sheridan told them to get the
hell out of the galaxy. But this one fact -- this one too-easy resolution --
had me feeling a little let down. I don't know what more should have happened,
but I just feel that what did happen wasn't enough somehow.

This was one of my favorite episodes. I can tell my favorites by whether
or not I feel the urge to fast-forward passed any scenes after I've rewatched
it a few times. I feel no urges to skip passed anything in this episode. The
only other episodes that meet that criteria are "Severed Dreams" and "Whatever
Happened to Mr. Garibaldi." So many good scenes and dialogue that I'd just
list an entire synopsis of the show as I told you what I liked, so I'll shoot
off a couple of "really loved" moments.

Londo's destruction of the Shadow ships as Morden screamed in terror was a
beautiful scene that had me cheering for the old guy like I haven't done in
years. I loved it when the guards cleared away the Shadow escort as well. Was
there just one Shadow there? I could only see one, but I wonder if there was
another that we couldn't see in the narrow TV format.

The final scene with John and Delenn sitting comfortably in each other's
warmth as they tried to comprehend what had happened was also one of my
favorite scenes of all time. I loved how Sheridan was able to complete
Delenn's sentence about no longer being afraid of shadows. Gosh, you'd think
they were an old married couple or something. :-) And *thank you* for a
snuggle at the end. After the total lack of any display of affection between
the two in the previous episode, it was very refreshing to witness that comfort
that those two share so perfectly.

Now I'm very much looking forward to "taking back what is ours" in the rest
of this season (not to mention "a year of joy" :-).

Take care,

  -- Brent

I think that, for me, what mitigates against that is that a) it wasn't
just Delenn and Sheridan, it was with virtually every other major civilization
around backing their play, and adding their support, their voice, even being
williing to die for the sake of this confrontation. If it were just the two of
them...they'd be scragged. The two forces needed to be shown that the others
had turned against them, and that their true faces had been exposed.

       b) The other key for me is that neither the Vorlons nor the Shadows saw
themselves as conquerers or adversaries...both believed they were doing what
was right for us. And like any possesive parent, they'll keep on believing
that until the kid is strong enough to stand up and say, "No, this is what *I*
want."

Most wars tend to end with one singular even...sometimes it's a big
bomb, or a series of big bombs...and sometimes it comes with a negotiation. The
two sides meet in a room, sometimes with representatives of other nations, and
together they hammer out a truce, or a peace. There's the Nagasaki solution on
the one hand, and the "let's meet in a room and talk about this" of Jimmy
Carter, Anwar Sadat and Minister Begin.

       Both work.

                                                                       jms
