Joe,

I finally got the opportunity to watch "No Compromises" a couple of
days ago... (One of the problems with not having cable is, I'm still seeing
the new episodes behind everyone else!) I really, really liked it. The main
title sequence was very cool, and I especially loved the music! It was
very... majestic, I suppose you could say. And of course I enjoyed hearing
the wonderful "Voices of Authority" theme, which I've loved since I got that
soundtrack! <g>

I sort of wondered about Simon, though -- his name, I mean. My class
just read _The Lord of the Flies_ for English, and our teacher was talking
about how the name "Simon" means "listener." He noted that many authors
choose names because of their meanings. I wondered if you decided to give the
character the name Simon because of the name's meaning, or just because it
sounded right. In a sense, after all, Simon is a listener (to words and
thoughts), and he remembers things that he hears and sees. (I didn't realize
that when I thought "Hey, he's pretty cute," that marked him as a dead
person... <g>)

(Possible *slight* spoiler for "In the Beginning follows...)

By the way, I thought I'd also congratulate you while you're here...
<g> I somehow convinced my English teacher to watch "In the Beginning" when
we were on Christmas break. When I came back to school, he told me that he'd
watched it (even though he doesn't like TV) and that it was "more substantial"
than most of the other stuff on television. He also liked the fact that the
humans were "getting their butts kicked," which, to him, was more probable
than that humans would be the dominant race in the future. I'm trying to get
him to watch the show every day, but he's very busy, so I don't think he does.
But I was very glad that he liked it... Now he knows I'm not completely nuts
when I talk about this show... <g>

"This was unfair to the B5 brass and said no. CC was in England promoting the

Just to clarify...since she had declined to sign the same extension the
rest of the cast signed, she was no longer working for B5 at that time, and
hadn't been for over a month. You can't fire someone who isn't working for
you. All WB could do was make an offer, which she could accept or not.

                                                                    jms

Actually I rather like Jeffery Combs. Is he no longer allowed to do B5 by
virtue of pressure from "The Mountain"? I always figured Harriman Grey as a
natural recurring character, an offset for Berster.

Subject: Tonite's Ep.

Joe, the more I see the show, the more convinced I am that you had divine
guidance in the casting procedure. Andreas has got to be one of the most
gifted actors living and with only certain exceptions the rest of the cast
being not far behind. I am now speaking of the scene as Londo's conscience.
Very powerful.

Mira's scene saying farewell to Billy (Lennier) was a tear jerker because the
viewer knows for certain that Delenn know for certain how Lennier feels about
her and how she now feels about him. I've been in Lennier's shoes. So it was
especially meaningful to me.

On another subject and this may not be the venue for the question; in the
latest Valen comic, are the alien writings simply arbitrary scribbles or have
you or someone else organized them into a viable written language - the
Minbari in particular.

I ask this only because back when the first ST film was produced, Lee Cole and
some of her associates were the first to begin organizing the Klingon language
into some sort of reproduceable alphabet and spoken tongue. I just wondered
if you had done the same with Minbar.

No, given that these are one-time-only aliens, it seemed unwise to spend
all the time and attention to create a detailed language for them.

Hi Joe,

Yet another great episode. G'Kar proves once again that he is my absolute
favorite character on Babylon 5. I especially loved seeing him imitate
Cartagia.

Vir nearly brought me to tears twice: when saying goodbye to Lennier (it was
the Minbari hand gesture that got me!) and during his vigil for Londo.

One thing: I was watching the opening credits with the closed captioning
turned on, and Zathras is misquoted in the captioning as saying, "You are the
One we want," instead of, "You are the One who was."

Wow.

That was a very difficult episode to watch, not least because I couldn't see
much of it very well. My vision kept blurring due to the excessive amounts of
fluid that kept appearing in my eyes... <g>

But I know I'm going to have to watch it again about a dozen times over the
next few days simply to try to pin down even half of the things that were in
there. Every bit of the Londo portion of the episode resonated with something
we had seen before, but of course I couldn't sit down right now and identify
more than a few of the specifics.

And after all that, I had almost forgotten by the end of the episode that
Lennier was leaving. Which somehow seems appropriate for Lennier.

Joe, I think you've outdone yourself again. It was superb, in every respect.
