I also found the telepath trilogy, especially the last book, to contain a
lot of philosophical overtones.  Especially with Galen's quest for
"enlightenment" as I like to call it.

You can also track a parallel to Maslow's Pyramid of Self-Actualization, going
from the baser needs to the more subtle, transcendent needs.  A web search
should give you a lot on this one.
